Grian Chatten (born 19 July 1995 in Barrow-in-Furness, England) is an Irish musician, singer and songwriter best known as the frontman and lyricist of the post-punk band Fontaines D.C., as well as for his work as a solo artist.
Although born in England to an English mother and an Irish father, Chatten moved to Ireland when he was only a month old. His family lived a relatively nomadic life before eventually settling in Skerries, County Dublin, when he was twelve. Later relocating to Dublin city, he studied at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute, where he met future bandmates Conor Curley, Carlos O’Connell, Conor Deegan and Tom Coll. United by a shared interest in music and poetry, the group began collaborating creatively and even published several poetry pamphlets together before forming Fontaines D.C. in 2017.
The band quickly emerged as one of the most important voices in contemporary post-punk. Their debut album Dogrel (2019), released on Partisan Records, received widespread critical acclaim and introduced the group to an international audience. Chatten’s lyrical style and intense vocal delivery drew comparisons to iconic post-punk figures such as Ian Curtis and Mark E. Smith. The band followed this success with A Hero’s Death (2020), another critically celebrated release that further highlighted Chatten’s poetic lyricism and distinctive narrative voice. Subsequent albums continued to expand the band’s sonic palette while maintaining their reputation as one of the defining guitar bands of their era.
In 2023, Chatten launched his solo career with the release of the singles “The Score” and “Fairlies”, followed by his debut solo album Chaos for the Fly. The record revealed a more introspective and atmospheric side to his songwriting, blending folk, chamber pop and alternative influences while retaining the lyrical depth that had become central to his work.
Alongside his recording career, Chatten has developed a reputation as a compelling live performer and an expressive lyricist whose writing often draws from poetry, literature and personal reflection. His voice and songwriting continue to play a central role in shaping the evolving sound of Fontaines D.C., while his solo work offers a more intimate exploration of his artistic identity.
Chatten currently lives in London. Outside of music, he has spoken openly about experiencing panic attacks before being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a diagnosis that helped him better understand and manage his mental health.
