Fatboy Slim gives his debut another lease of life

Norman Cook has marked the thirtieth anniversary of Better Living Through Chemistry, the 1996 debut that launched the Fatboy Slim name. The digital deluxe edition arrived on 25 September 2026 through BMG. A half-speed remastered 2LP and a 2CD edition follow on 2 October 2026.

The expanded set includes the original album and adds B-sides, rarities and new remixes. Sem Jacobs supplies new mixes on the 2CD and digital versions; the digital release also carries further remixes from Chinonegro and Ammo Avenue. New liner notes by music critic Alexis Petridis place the record in the rise of big beat and trace what the album did for the sound that carried Cook from clubs into the wider mainstream.

Cook said of the anniversary edition: "Better Living Through Chemistry was basically me figuring out what I was doing. I was making music for the dancefloor, the bedroom, the afterparty and anyone who’d listen. Looking back, it’s got all the mistakes, experiments and madness of that time in it, but that’s probably what I love about it most. It was the beginning of the Fatboy Slim adventure and I’m amazed that, all these years later, people are still discovering it, dancing to it and asking me about it. It feels pretty bloody good to give it another lease of life."

From Hull basslines to the 303

Cook’s path to that debut ran through several bands and several hits. In the 1980s he played bass for the Housemartins, the Hull indie group whose a cappella reading of Caravan of Love reached number one in the UK. After they split, he formed Beats International in Brighton and scored another chart-topper with Dub Be Good to Me. Work with Freak Power, Pizzaman and the Mighty Dub Katz followed, each leaving its mark before the Fatboy Slim project took shape and helped popularise big beat across the 1990s.

Better Living Through Chemistry was the first album under that name. It peaked at No. 69 on the UK Albums Chart and carried tracks that became cornerstones of the set — Everybody Needs a 303, Going Out of My Head and Punk to Funk among them. EPs from the same period, including Punk to Funk and Santa Cruz in 1996 and the two parts of Everybody Needs a 303 in 1997, fed the same energy into the singles market. The album sat at the start of a catalogue that later reissues have revisited, even as new Fatboy Slim material has kept arriving — Bus Stop Please and Role Model in 2024, and Satisfaction Skank in 2025 among recent titles.

Anniversary week and what comes next

The reissue follows earlier returns to the Fatboy Slim back catalogue and arrives while Cook remains a regular on the festival circuit.

Physical copies of the anniversary edition are due on 2 October. The digital deluxe is already available to buy and to stream, carrying the original album, the rarities and the new remixes that give the record its fresh run.
