Fontaines DC call Dopamine Chamber their finest work
Conor Deegan and Tom Coll map a colder, synthetic fifth album and a warning from Grian Chatten as the eleven-track set lands on XL this Friday.
Bassist Conor Deegan and drummer Tom Coll have spoken at length about Fontaines DC’s fifth studio album, Dopamine Chamber, days before its release. The record follows Romance, the 2024 album that pushed the Dublin band further into the spotlight. Deegan and Coll present Dopamine Chamber as their finest work to date, a clear shift from the neon tones of its predecessor to colder, more synthetic sounds, with smashed guitars, sweeping strings and coloured synths.Frontman Grian Chatten has called the album a “catastrophic warning”. In the band’s telling it reflects anxieties, uncertainties and a sense of tipping points in the modern world. The pair stressed that the record’s scale and ambition suit large audiences while still addressing the existential questions of the age. For the first time on any Fontaines DC release there is a guest: Rosalía appears on the duet “Where Is Gone?”.
A colder palette
Production came from James Ford, with engineering led by Marta Salogni. The band recorded between London, the English countryside and Palermo, moving the work across different rooms rather than locking into a single studio. Both tracks have already given listeners a taste of the new temperature — harder edges and a synthetic sheen that sits some distance from the warmer neon of Romance.
Fontaines DC met as a quintet in Dublin, shaped by the city’s counter-culture and answering it with concise, immediately authentic indie-punk. Early singles and a reputation for brooding, trenchant live performances — supporting acts such as Hinds, The Horrors, Girl Band, Franz Ferdinand and The Lemon Twigs, and festival slots at Electric Picnic, Hard Working Class Heroes and Other Voices — laid the groundwork before the albums arrived. Dogrel in 2019 announced them properly. A Hero’s Death followed in 2020, then Skinty Fia in 2022 and Romance in 2024. Along the way came further singles, an Apple Music session and the Irish-language companion Skinty Fia go deo. Dopamine Chamber is the fifth full studio statement, still on XL, and the first to carry an outside vocal collaboration of this kind.
What the claim means
The timing matters. Deegan and Coll’s remarks now place those singles inside a larger argument: that this is the record on which the band’s craft and ambition meet most cleanly, and that the colder palette is not decoration but the point.
Whether Dopamine Chamber becomes the peak they describe will be settled by the work itself once it is out. For now the claim is on the table, the guest is named, the producers are fixed, and its release is the next step. The Dublin five have never been short of conviction; this time they have put it on the sleeve of the album they call their best.
