Forthlin Road key fetches three times its estimate
A three-page letter and a period photograph came with the brass Yale original, while 1964 US-tour autographs cleared five thousand close behind and another Dingle landmark still carries its own guide price.
The original brass Yale house key to 20 Forthlin Road in Liverpool sold for £6,100 at Dominic Winter Auctioneers, three times its pre-sale estimate of £2,000–£3,000. The lot was offered with a three-page letter from the then occupant and a period photograph. Bidding left little doubt about the pull of a small object tied to a large address. The house was Paul McCartney's family home from 1955 until late 1963. It is now owned by the National Trust. There he learned to play several instruments and wrote songs with John Lennon — the partnership that shaped The Beatles. A key is not a manuscript and it adds no credit to any catalogue, yet it is a physical link to the rooms where that craft began, and the room treated it as such.
Provenance on the block
In the same sale, Beatles autographs obtained by a fan's father who worked on the band's 1964 US security team sold for £5,124. Auction director Chris Albury noted that the strong bidding reflected enduring Beatles popularity and the personal provenance attached to the material. The two results sat side by side: one fixed to the Liverpool house years, the other to the first American chapter of the group's life on the road.
What the figure marks
Memorabilia of this kind does not rewrite the work. It does not restore a line-up or reopen a studio book. What it does is keep the early Liverpool addresses in sight. Forthlin Road remains the place where instruments were learned and writing with Lennon took root, still standing under National Trust care more than six decades after McCartney left. Forthlin Road's brass Yale original now sits with whoever matched the bidding, while the National Trust house itself stays where it is — a fixed point on the map of how McCartney and Lennon began, still able to move a domestic key well past its guide when the provenance is plain.
That is the update. The estimate is no longer the story; the realised price is, and so is the company it kept on the block.
