Healy: The 1975 album is pretty much finished

In a Newcastle tribute video, he also said he may never complete it. No date has been set, nearly four years after Being Funny in a Foreign Language.

Matty Healy told a Newcastle audience on Saturday that The 1975’s next studio album is "pretty much finished" before adding that he cannot finish it and may never do so. The message was delivered by video at the Sunday for Sammy tribute because the frontman could not attend in person. “I can’t finish this album, which I don't know if I’m ever going to do it,” he said. “I’m never going to finish it.”

His father, the actor Tim Healy, also appeared in the recording and endorsed the album.

The remarks come after months of cryptic social media teasers from the band. They also follow earlier reports that two albums had been completed, with at least one expected to carry the title DOGS. No release date has been announced.

Four years since the last studio set

Being Funny in a Foreign Language, the group’s most recent studio album, was released in October 2022. In the time since, The 1975 have concentrated on live documents rather than new studio work. At Their Very Best captured a night at Madison Square Garden in November 2022. Live From Gorilla and Live From Real World Studios followed in 2023. Still... At Their Very Best, drawn from a performance at the AO Arena in Manchester on 17 February 2024, appeared in 2025.

The band formed in Wilmslow, Cheshire, in 2002 and still comprise Matty Healy, Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald on bass and George Daniel. Their name was taken from a page of scribblings Healy found in his copy of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, dated “1 June, The 1975”. A run of EPs — Facedown and Sex in 2012, then IV and Music For Cars in 2013 — led to the self-titled debut album later that year. Those early records set the pattern: sharp pop-rock songwriting, a strong visual identity, and a frontman whose stage presence has remained central to the project.

That catalogue has kept the band in circulation while studio output has paused. The Saturday video therefore lands as both reassurance and provocation. Listeners who have tracked the teasers and the talk of DOGS now have confirmation that substantial work exists, and an admission that the person responsible for finishing it is not sure he will. The contradiction is left unresolved.

What remains unannounced

Nothing further has been said about a single, a tracklist, collaborators or a label schedule. The 1975 have not indicated when — or whether — the album will reach shops and streaming services. Until an official campaign begins, Healy’s words stand as the only public update: the record is pretty much finished, and he is never going to finish it.

For an audience that has lived with Being Funny in a Foreign Language for nearly four years, the gap is already long by the standards of a band who once moved quickly from EP to album. The live releases have filled part of that space, but they are documents of performance, not the next chapter of writing. Whether the new material surfaces under the DOGS title or another, and whether it arrives as one album or two, is still unknown. The video from Newcastle has simply made the wait more pointed.
