Levellers take Levelling The Land back on the road

Rock City in Nottingham gets the full 1991 album on 19 November, with The Meffs in support, after a Brighton homecoming earlier this month.

The Levellers will play Rock City in Nottingham on Thursday 19 November 2026 as part of a UK tour celebrating 35 years of Levelling The Land, their 1991 platinum-selling second album. The set will feature the full album, including One Way, 15 Years, Far From Home, The Game, Liberty Song, Riverflow, Boatman and Battle Of The Beanfield, and other classics from across the catalogue. Support comes from The Meffs.

Bassist Jeremy Cunningham said: “This year we celebrate 35 years of Levelling The Land, so we’re looking forward to getting out on the road and playing some of our favourite songs from that album – plus some other classics too. We’ll see you there.”

Brighton roots and a breakthrough record

The Levellers formed in Brighton in 1988 and took their name from the Levellers political movement. The group have long been built around Mark Chadwick, Jeremy Cunningham, drummer Charlie Heather, violinist Jon Sevink and Simon Friend, with Matt Savage on keyboards and Dan Donnelly also part of the documented line-up. Early EPs Carry Me and Outside Inside arrived in 1989, followed by a debut LP in 1990. International success came after they signed to China Records and released Levelling The Land, the second album that made them one of the most popular indie bands in Britain in the early 1990s and went platinum at home.

That era also put them on the biggest festival stages. They performed at Glastonbury in 1992 and returned in 1994 as headliners on the Pyramid Stage before a record crowd of 300,000. A live album drawn from Brixton Academy followed in 1992, underlining how quickly Levelling The Land had become a stage staple. The years since have brought a steady run of studio and live releases — Zeitgeist in 1995, Peace in 2020, The Lockdown Sessions in 2021, Together All The Way in 2023, and in 2025 both Collective / Live and a 30th-anniversary deluxe edition of Zeitgeist — while the band have continued to record and tour.

The anniversary on stage

The Rock City show sits inside a wider 35th-anniversary celebration already under way. On 5 September 2026 the Levellers played a homecoming gig at Hove Park in Brighton and performed Levelling The Land in full. The November tour keeps the same centre of gravity: the 1991 album played in full, with room for the other songs Cunningham singled out as favourites from the wider catalogue.

For listeners who know the band through the folk-rock and anarcho-punk charge of those early records, or through the later run of albums and the long life on the road, the anniversary dates offer Levelling The Land as a single arc rather than a scattering of familiar tracks. It was the record that carried them from Brighton to a national and international audience; hearing it whole, 35 years on, is the point of the current run. Nottingham on 19 November is one confirmed stop, with The Meffs opening the night and the full album still the draw as the celebrations continue.
