Tears for Fears finally put forty years of gigs on record
The Girl That I Call Home leads four new studio cuts, and the companion film opens in more than 1,100 cinemas either side of the album's 25 October release.
Since the announcement broke at the end of September, the shape of Tears for Fears' autumn package has come into clearer focus. Songs For A Nervous Planet, their first official live album, is confirmed for 25 October through Concord Music. The double set draws on recordings from the Tipping Point Tour and adds four new studio tracks, with a cinema film timed to the same weekend. The studio additions are Say Goodbye To Mum And Dad, Emily Said, Astronaut and The Girl That I Call Home. The Girl That I Call Home is the new single; a video has already been released. Roland Orzabal described the song as a love song to his wife Emily, written in Hawaii. It sits among the live tapes as a fresh studio statement rather than a road recording.
Curt Smith has underlined how long the wait for an official live album has been. He noted that the duo have improved as a live act over the years and that the record is forty years in the making. For listeners who followed the pair on stage through successive eras without a full live album under the band's own name, that remark puts the release in plain terms: the catalogue on the road is finally being issued as a proper document.
Formats and the film
The album will be available as a two-LP set on vinyl, a deluxe triple-vinyl edition sold direct to the consumer, on CD and in digital form. The deluxe triple-vinyl sits outside standard retail, aimed at those who want the expanded physical cut of the Tipping Point Tour tapes and the new songs.
Alongside the audio, Tears For Fears Live (A Tipping Point Film) premieres in more than 1,100 cinemas worldwide on 24 and 26 October. The film was shot at the FirstBank Amphitheater at Graystone Quarry in Franklin, Tennessee. Those two cinema dates bookend the album's release day, turning the arrival of the live set into a weekend event on the big screen as well as on the stereo.
After The Tipping Point
The package follows The Tipping Point, the 2022 studio album that underpinned the tour now preserved on the live record, and earlier dates the duo played in Las Vegas. What arrives on 25 October is not a new studio album in full, but a hybrid: the tour fixed in an official release, topped with four newly written studio pieces and carried into cinemas by the companion film.
Booking for the screenings will depend on local cinema listings in each territory. The album's formats and date are set. No further live dates beyond those captured for the record have been announced, so for now the story stops at the tape, the new songs and the film weekend in late October.
