U2 back in the schoolyard after fifty years

U2 played a surprise 30-minute set in the schoolyard at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Clontarf, north Dublin, on 25 September 2026. The date fell exactly on the anniversary of the note Larry Mullen Jr pinned to the school's noticeboard in 1976, seeking musicians and setting the band in motion.

Around 1,000 students and staff filled the yard for the performance. It was the first time the group had played the school since their final student gig there in 1978.

The set opened with I Will Follow and moved through Vertigo, Beautiful Day and Out of Control. Chants of “one more tune” brought an encore of With or Without You. Bono introduced Mullen as “the man who pinned the note on the noticeboard” and Adam Clayton as “the streaker of the green corridor”. The four members — Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr — were joined onstage by young musicians from Music Generation, the education programme the band co-founded, for an orchestral arrangement of One. That arrangement echoed a school performance from 1977.

Fifty years from the noticeboard

U2 formed in Dublin in 1976. The line-up has remained Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. Rooted at first in post-punk, their music has retained an anthemic core built on Bono’s expressive vocals and the Edge’s chiming, effects-based guitar. Lyrics have often carried spiritual imagery alongside personal and sociopolitical themes. Live work has been central: elaborate tours have defined the group’s public life as much as the records.

The studio catalogue began with Boy in 1980, then October (1981), War (1983) and The Unforgettable Fire (1984). The 1983 live album Under a Blood Red Sky fixed an early image of the band on stage. Decades of releases followed. Songs of Surrender arrived in 2023 as a full reworking of earlier material. More recent entries include the Stories Of Surrender EP in 2025 and Days Of Ash in 2026. Against that backdrop, the schoolyard appearance pointed forward as well as back.

Towards Carnaval De Luz

The Mount Temple set also referenced the band’s new album, Carnaval De Luz, scheduled for 13 November 2026 and their first in nine years. No full tour to support the record has been announced, but the anniversary gig placed the forthcoming release in the city and the institution where the group began.

Music Generation’s role on One underlined a continuing thread in the band’s work beyond the stage: support for young players and music education in Ireland. Bringing those musicians into the arrangement of a song first heard by many as a stadium anthem returned the material to a school setting and to a performance memory from 1977.

For listeners who know the albums and the tours, the half-hour carried a simple charge. The early songs sat beside later ones in the yard where four teenagers first assembled. The noticeboard date locked the occasion to origin rather than nostalgia for its own sake. Students who had not been born when Boy appeared heard I Will Follow and With or Without You on the ground that produced them.

What comes next is the November album. The schoolyard set does not replace a tour announcement or a formal launch; it marks fifty years on the calendar and on the site. U2 left Mount Temple with Carnaval De Luz ahead and their formation story restated in the place it began.
