U2 take MusiCares' highest honour for 2027

MusiCares announced on 10 September that U2 — Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr — will be honoured as its 2027 Persons of the Year. The gala and concert take place on 5 February 2027, two nights before the Grammy Awards. The award marks five decades of musical achievement and humanitarian service.

In a statement the band said: “We are huge fans of MusiCares and the lifelines they provide across the incredible pool of talent that is the music industry. We’ve been recording and touring for 50 years because of that pool… ‘Persons of the Year’ couldn’t be a better title as it’s the people we’ve been so fortunate to work with, and of course our indomitable audience, that have given us the opportunity to keep making music and keep rocking the boat on things we really care about. It’s such an honour, and we’re very excited to be in the front row of our first ever U2 gig…we know we’re gonna be outplayed.”

MusiCares executive director Theresa Wolters praised the band’s use of music to bring people together.

From Boy to Days Of Ash

U2 are an Irish rock band from Dublin, formed in 1976. The four-piece line-up of Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr has remained intact from the start. Rooted first in post-punk, their style has shifted across the decades while retaining an anthemic core built on Bono’s vocals and the Edge’s chiming, effects-laden guitar. Bono’s lyrics have long mixed personal and sociopolitical themes, often edged with spiritual imagery. The group have also been known for elaborate live productions that turned tours into events in their own right.

The early run still frames the career for many listeners. *Boy* arrived in 1980, followed by *October* in 1981, *War* in 1983 and *The Unforgettable Fire* in 1984. Live documents such as *Under a Blood Red Sky* (1983) and the later *Wide Awake In America* EP fixed the band’s reputation on stage as firmly as the studio records. The catalogue has continued through remasters, live EPs drawn from major tours, and more recent studio work: the single *Atomic City* and the album *Songs of Surrender* in 2023, the *Stories Of Surrender* EP with the Jacknife Lee Ensemble in 2025, and the *Days Of Ash* EP in 2026.

That 2026 activity sits immediately behind the MusiCares announcement. The band have released new singles and EPs this year ahead of a forthcoming studio album, keeping the same four-piece unit that first played Dublin clubs half a century ago.

What the honour marks

Persons of the Year is MusiCares’ principal annual recognition. For U2 it lands at a point when the group can look back on fifty years of recording and touring while still working towards new material. The statement’s emphasis on the “pool of talent” and on the audience is consistent with how the band have long framed their own longevity: not as a closed circle, but as a collaboration with players, crews and crowds that made the run possible.

The February gala will place them in the audience for once — the “first ever U2 gig” line in their own reply underlines the unusual position. What the night itself will contain beyond the honour has not yet been set out in detail. What is already clear is the timing: two nights before the Grammys, in the middle of awards season, with a new studio album still ahead and a half-century of records and tours behind them.

For a band that began in Dublin in 1976 and has stayed together in the same line-up ever since, the MusiCares title is less a career full stop than a public marker of the work still in progress.
